Amazon’s help sends you to the Communications Preference Center to stop its marketing emails. It also says its approved emails come from amazon.com addresses, and a Gmail filter limited to the Promotions tab only takes the mail Gmail itself sorted as promotional.

Amazon's promotions are one switch. Batmail's rules cover every shop the same way.

Amazon's Communications Preference Center is where its marketing emails are switched off.

  1. Go to Amazon’s Communications Preference Center.
  2. From the General Settings category, expand the Email subcategory.
  3. Amazon’s page words the next step as: “uncheck, Do not send me any marketing email for now.”
  4. Select Save changes.
  5. For marketing sent by post, expand the Mail category and uncheck Get occasional marketing about products, services, deals, and recommendations in the mail.
  6. Select Save changes again.

Amazon's other email subscriptions are managed in separate places.

Amazon’s page adds that your other email subscriptions, meaning subscription emails and emails about programs you are enrolled in, are managed in Your Email Subscriptions. Its page on subscription email preferences links four places, and says new preferences may take 1 to 5 business days to take effect.

Amazon says genuine emails contain amazon.com, and Message Center holds every one it sent.

Amazon’s page on spotting fake emails says approved Amazon emails contain ‘amazon.com’ and are sent from an amazon.com email address, and to look for misspellings or added or swapped characters in the sender address. It also says Message Center holds all email communication sent by Amazon: if an email is not in Message Center, it was not sent by Amazon. That is why the filter below matches the domain.

Limiting the filter to the Promotions category keeps it to the mail Gmail sorted as promotional.

A filter on amazon.com alone would take every email Amazon sends, orders and deliveries included. Gmail’s category:promotions operator finds the mail Gmail has sorted into the Promotions tab, so the two together match only Amazon’s promotional mail.

Paste this into the Gmail search box

from:(amazon.com) category:promotions

Open this filter in the Gmail filter generator

Save it with Show search options, paste the search and click Search first. Google’s steps say to check which emails show up before you click Create filter, and that list is exactly what the filter would take. Then tick Skip the Inbox (Archive it) and a label (Google’s steps).

These are the questions people ask next.

How do I unsubscribe from Amazon marketing emails?

Open the Communications Preference Center, expand the Email subcategory under General Settings, follow Amazon's step for the marketing email setting (its help page words it as: uncheck "Do not send me any marketing email for now") and select Save changes. Amazon's page also lists a Mail category for marketing sent by post.

Where do I manage Amazon's other email subscriptions?

Amazon's help page links four places: Your Amazon Prime Membership, Your Subscribe & Save Items, the Communication Preferences Center, and Amazon Delivers Email Subscriptions. It says new preferences may take 1 to 5 business days to take effect.

How do I know an email really came from Amazon?

Amazon says approved emails contain amazon.com and are sent from an amazon.com address, and that its Message Center holds all email communication sent by Amazon. If an email is not in Message Center, Amazon says it was not sent by Amazon.

Will the Gmail filter hide my order and delivery emails?

The filter adds category:promotions, so it only matches mail Gmail has sorted into the Promotions tab. Check the search in the Gmail search box before you save it, and the results show exactly what the filter would take.

Does this stop Amazon Web Services emails too?

No. AWS has its own AWS Email Preference Center. Choose Unsubscribe from Email, enter your email address, then clear the box for any email type you want to stop or select Unsubscribe me from all marketing emails. AWS says you still get important account notifications, such as billing statements.

One rule can cover every shop's promotions, not only Amazon's.

Write a rule in plain English, such as “archive anything that looks like a store promotion”, and Batmail applies it overnight and logs the reason for each action. Scout is free on one inbox, no card required.
