Gmail's spam tools work one sender at a time. Batmail's rules sort new mail overnight.
Report spam moves an email to Spam, and Gmail learns from each report.
On a computer
- Open Gmail on your computer.
- Select one or more emails.
- At the top, click Report spam.
In the Android app
- Open the Gmail app and open the email you want to report.
- At the top right, tap More, then Report spam.
Steps from Gmail Help: Report spam in Gmail, read 21 October 2026.
What a report does
- You report it
Select the email, then Report spam.
- It moves
The email is added to Spam.
- Gmail learns
Similar emails are caught more efficiently as you report more.
If you signed up to the sender, unsubscribe instead of reporting.
Google’s tip is that if you signed up to receive messages from a specific sender and no longer want them, you click Unsubscribe or Go to website. Reporting is for mail you never asked for. The mass unsubscribe guide covers the Manage subscriptions page, and the block guide covers the sender that ignores it.
Gmail puts a warning at the top of every email in Spam that explains why it is there.
Google lists the reasons the warning can give. Reading it tells you whether the email was caught as a scam, sent by an address that was faked, or sent to Spam by you.

To keep real emails out of Spam, use Not spam, Google Contacts or a filter.
Take one email out of Spam
- Open Gmail on your computer.
- In the main menu on the left, click More, then Spam.
- Check the box next to the email you want to remove.
- At the top, click Not spam.
Steps from Gmail Help: Report spam in Gmail, read 21 October 2026.
Google lists two more ways for people you know: add the sender to Google Contacts, and Gmail stops sending their messages to Spam, or create a filter for that sender that labels their email as important. A blocked sender is the exception. Google says that even when you remove a blocked sender’s emails from Spam, Gmail still identifies their emails as spam.
Spam empties itself after 30 days, and you can empty it sooner.
On a computer
- In the main menu on the left, click More, then Spam.
- At the top, click Delete all spam messages now.
On an Android phone, open Menu, then Spam, and tap Empty spam now. Google says emails in Spam are permanently deleted after 30 days, or when you empty Spam yourself (Gmail messages are missing).
A scam email is phishing, and Gmail has a separate report for it.
Google describes phishing as an attempt to steal personal information or break in to online accounts using deceptive emails, messages, ads or sites that look similar to ones you already use. A phishing message may do any of these:
- Ask for your personal or financial information.
- Ask you to click links or download software.
- Impersonate a reputable organization, such as your bank, a social media site you use or your workplace.
- Impersonate someone you know, such as a family member, friend or coworker.
- Look exactly like a message from someone you trust.

Report an email as phishing, on a computer
- Go to Gmail and open the message.
- Next to Reply, click More.
- Click Report phishing.

If Gmail marked a real message as phishing, the same menu has Report not phishing. To read a suspicious email before you act on it, paste its text into the free phishing email checker, which gives a verdict, the red flags it found and what to do next.
A filter on the domain catches every address a repeat sender writes from.
Reporting teaches Gmail in general. A filter deals with one sender for good: it matches the part of the address after the @, so a new address at the same domain is caught too. Replace offers.example with the sender’s domain, and choose Delete it if you never want to see the mail.
from:(offers.example)
Save it with Show search options, then Create filter, as in Google’s steps. Deleted mail waits in Trash for 30 days before Gmail removes it for good.

Google says emails you report as spam are added to Spam, and that as you report more spam, Gmail identifies similar emails as spam more efficiently.
How long does mail stay in Spam?
Google says emails in Spam are permanently deleted after 30 days or when you empty Spam yourself. To empty it sooner, open Spam and choose Delete all spam messages now.
How do I report a scam email as phishing?
On a computer, open the message, click More next to Reply and choose Report phishing. If Gmail marked a real message as phishing by mistake, the same menu has Report not phishing.
How do I stop real emails from going to Spam?
Google lists three ways: remove the email from Spam with Not spam, add the sender to Google Contacts, or create a filter for that sender. A blocked sender is the exception, because Gmail keeps treating their mail as spam.
