Guide: Gmail is changing

Gmail ends Send as, POP fetching and Gmailify for other providers' accounts in January 2027.

Google’s Help says Gmail will stop supporting Send as for third-party addresses, POP fetching of other accounts, and Gmailify. Send as ends starting January 2027, and Google says existing users can keep POP fetching and Gmailify until January 2027. Mail already in Gmail stays, and forwarding an address into Gmail keeps its new mail coming. Every fact below is from Google’s own help pages, linked at the foot of the page.

Forwarding puts every address in one Gmail inbox. Batmail works that inbox overnight.

Gmail will stop three features for other providers' accounts, and Google has dated each one.

The first is Send as for third-party addresses, such as @yahoo.com or @outlook.com: starting January 2027, Gmail will no longer support it. The second is Check mail from other accounts, the setting that fetches another provider’s mail into Gmail with POP. The third is Gmailify, which gave a third-party account Gmail’s spam protection, inbox categories and faster search. Google names the month and gives no exact day.

You are affected if you send from, or pull mail in from, an address on another provider.

Check which of these you use today. Google says the change does not affect Google Workspace aliases or other Gmail addresses you own, and that every message synced before the change stays in Gmail.

The Gmail app on Android, iPhone and iPad uses a standard IMAP connection for other providers’ accounts, so reading and sending from them there carries on. Google also says you can still import mail and contacts from a third-party account on the web, as a one-time import: messages do not sync continuously.

Four routes keep an old address working, and the right one depends on how you use that address.

Four ways to keep an address working after Gmail stops Send as and POP fetching, what each keeps, and who it suits.

New sign-ups need no route at all if they use a Gmail plus address. Gmail delivers janedoe+school@gmail.com to janedoe@gmail.com, as Google explains on its send from a different address or alias page, and the search deliveredto:janedoe+school@gmail.com finds those emails. Google’s search operator list has the rest.

Forwarding sends the old address's mail into Gmail, and a filter puts it under its own label.

Google’s way to replace POP fetching is automatic forwarding from the other provider. The steps are in that provider’s settings and differ from one to the next, so Google points to the provider’s own documentation. The Gmail side is the same everywhere.

Forward the old address, then label what arrives

  1. Open the settings of your other email provider and find automatic forwarding. Google says to refer to your provider’s documentation for the steps.
  2. Forward new mail to your Gmail address.
  3. In Gmail on a computer, click Show search options in the search box at the top and paste the search below. To check it, click Search and look at the emails that show up.
  4. If the forwarded emails show up, open Show search options again, click Create filter at the bottom, tick Apply the label, choose or create the label, then click Create filter.

Replace you@oldmail.example with the old address you forward into Gmail. The search finds emails sent to that address.

Sending as the old address is the part Gmail drops, so decide now where you will send from.

Google’s Help names one place that keeps sending from another provider’s address: the Gmail app on Android, iPhone and iPad. The other provider’s own app or website always can. For a work or school address, an alias on your Google Workspace domain is not affected, and your administrator sets it up.

On an Android phone or tablet

  1. Open the Gmail app.
  2. At the top right, in the search bar, tap Profile.
  3. Tap Add another account, then choose your email provider from the list.
  4. Follow the steps on the screen to link the account.

To see every account in one list in that app, tap Menu, then All inboxes. A Workspace administrator can follow Google’s page on adding an email alias, and the data import tool covers migrating mail into Workspace.

Once everything lands in one Gmail inbox, Batmail can sort it with one set of rules.

Batmail sits on top of the Gmail you already use, works the inbox overnight, and sends one short brief each morning. It connects to Gmail and Google Workspace only, so the mail you forward in is in Gmail, and Batmail reads it there. Scout is free on one inbox, so one forwarded-into Gmail inbox is one set of rules and one morning brief.

These are the questions people ask next.

When does Gmail stop supporting Send as for addresses on other providers?

Google's Help says that starting January 2027, Gmail will no longer support the Send as feature for third-party email addresses, such as @yahoo.com or @outlook.com. Google names the month and gives no exact day. It says the change does not affect Google Workspace aliases or other Gmail addresses you own.

Will I lose the emails I already pulled into Gmail with POP?

No. Google says all messages synced before the change stay in Gmail.

Can I still use my Yahoo or Outlook account in the Gmail app?

Yes. Google says you can add third-party accounts like Yahoo! and Outlook to the Gmail app on Android, iPhone and iPad, which uses a standard IMAP connection, and keep reading and sending from them there.

How do I keep getting another address's mail in Gmail?

Set up automatic forwarding with your other email provider, so new emails appear in your Gmail inbox the way they did with POP fetching. Google says to refer to your provider's documentation for the steps. A work or school account can ask its administrator to migrate the mail into Google Workspace.

Does Batmail work with Outlook or Yahoo mail?

No. Batmail works with Gmail and Google Workspace. If you forward another address into your Gmail inbox, that mail is in Gmail, and Batmail works on it there.

Every step on this page comes from these official pages.

Once your addresses land in one Gmail inbox, one set of rules can sort them.

Write a rule in plain English, such as “archive anything that looks like a cold sales email”, and Batmail applies it overnight and writes down why it did each thing. Batmail works with Gmail and Google Workspace, and Scout is free on one inbox, no card required.
